These Marines also move far more believably the stiff, blocky movements of Dragon Rising have been replaced by smooth, realistic motions that go a long way towards immersing the player in the game. If you get close enough, you can even see the stitching on their uniforms and tiny items like pens hanging from their armor. Flat, relatively boring character models have been replaced with impressively detailed, well textured Marines that really look the part. Visually, the engine has made an enormous leap forward since Dragon Rising. It is a vast improvement over its forerunner in nearly every conceivable way, and if you're willing to commit to conquering the enormous learning curve you will find a ton of satisfaction in the punishing mountains of Tajikistan. If you are open to the genre or enjoyed Dragon Rising as thoroughly as I did despite its flaws, Red River may just wind up being one of your favorite games this year. Hardcore tactical shooters aren't for everyone, and if they aren't your thing you will find little in Operation Flashpoint: Red River to change your mind.

Many people simply weren't interested in such a hardcore tactical shooter (calling any game an accurate simulation of military operations is beyond ridiculous so I won't be using that term here, and yes that statement includes ArmA 2 for the PC fanatics out there) and grew bored without the set-pieces and constant action that are generally offered by FPS military titles. Others-perhaps the majority if user reviews are any indication-detested the difficult ballistic physics, questionable AI, and the quick, brutal deaths that usually followed even the smallest missteps. Some gamers, myself included, revelled in the unforgiving realism, wide open tactical gameplay, and focus on teamwork and planning.
